2017 Texas Class Relays - 200 Medley Video

01:47
Swimming News courtesy of SwimSwam.com (https://swimswam.com ) Video produced by Chris Thompson As report by Braden Keith The Texas men's swimming & diving teams held their annual Class Relay Meets on Thursday, and the results were the most encouraging results yet this season for the defending NCAA Champions. In the meet, which is one of many uniquely-formatted intrasquad meets (which are more like glorified full-speed practices) employed by Texas head coach Eddie Reese every season, the swimmers compete in a 200 medley relay and 200 free relay by class. That is to say, an all-star relay of freshmen compete against an all-star relay of sophomores, against one of juniors, against one of seniors, in each of two relays. Last year's meet saw some incredible splits from Townley Haas and Joseph Schooling, both of whom would go on to win multiple NCAA titles in individual events. This year saw more fireworks from the pair, along with their teammates. The best splits in each race, regardless of class: 200 medley Backstroke - John Shebat - 21.16 Breaststroke - Will Licon - 23.64 Butterfly - Joseph Schooling - 19.68 Freestyle - Townley Haas - 18.70 Aggregate - 1:23.18 **MUSIC courtesy of Pond5

Practice + Pancakes: Texas Men Sprint 25's and Play 6-Square

06:39
Practice starts at 3:00pm, but the UT men get there early to play 6-square (4-square but with 2 more squares). The goal was to get to the King Spot and stay there for as long as possible. Once you had gotten out 3 times, you were out of the game for good. For the amount of fun they had doing it, and how competitive they got with it, I felt like I was a kid at recess. It was a blast, and totally caught me off guard. Michael Andrew 200 Yard IM NAG Record, 1:45.29

02:16
Reported by Braden Keith at http://swimswam.com 14-year old Michael Andrew has smashed his own National Age Group Record in the 200 yard IM by over two seconds, swimming a 1:45.29 to win the event at the NASA Junior Cup in Florida on Wednesday evening. This meet, hosted by the same team but not the same meet as the NASA Age Group Showcase, has 16 & under and a 17-18 class and runs through Saturday in Clearwater. The 200 IM was Andrew's only entry on Wednesday, but it was a worthwhile one. His old best and old National Age Group Record in the event was a 1:47.42, set just last week at the NCSA Championships in nearby Orlando. In the race, Andrew just out-touched a very impressive swim in its own right from Aidan Burns of the Santa Clara Swim Club, who was 2nd in the 15-16 division in 1:45.36. Those swims were the two fastest from across the classifications. Andrew's splits, as compared to his times just a week ago: NASA 22.26/NCSA 23.28 NASA 26.13/NCSA 26.68 NASA 31.20/NCSA 31.42 NASA 25.70/NCSA 26.04 NASA 1:45.29/NASA 1:47.44 As the splits show, his times improved on every leg of this race, but the opening butterfly split of 22.26 was just really incredible. There are few 14 year olds in history who can split that fast on a 50 fly flat-start period, let alone leading off an IM. Andrew, after a 1:47.71 in prelims, now owns the four fastest times in the history of the event, with Gray Umbach being the second-best ever at 1:48.08. Reaching deeper, of the 16 fastest times in the history of the event, 13 of them belong to Andrew. He's still got some time to drop to get the 15-16 record, which right now is recognized as a 1:44.03 by Andrew Seliskar in 2013.

A Day in the (Meet) Life: Stanford Women's Swimming

04:19
The Stanford women need little introduction as their credentials are pretty well known. As a team, they are the 2017 NCAA champions, and the 2016 NCAA runner ups. They’ve scored numerous top recruits in the country over the last few years with Coach Greg Meehan at the helm. Overall, it would seem from the outside that they’ve found a very solid foundation for their team chemistry. Texas Speed Practice, 2015 Eddie Reese Invite: Gold Medal Minute presented by SwimOutlet.com

09:27
Swimming News is courtesy of SwimSwam.com (http://swimswam.com/magazine/ ) To view the latest racing suit technologies visit http://www.swimoutlet.com/racingtechnologies Each fall Coach Eddie Reese and Kris Kubik host the now famous Eddie Reese Invite for the University of Texas Men's Swimming Team. Events are slightly odd. Eddie likes to make them odd to insure his men will come away with fast times since they never race those distances. Reese's Invite is really one long SPEED SET. See the event lineup below: 600 IM 600 free 300 stroke 2000 free 300 IM 300 free 150 stroke 400 free 100 IM 100 free 50 stroke Junior Clark Smith‘s 2000 free was, in my opinion, the event of the day. The guy's a machine. His splits: 1000 split: 8:52+ 1650 split: 14:39 2000: 17:44 (1000/1000 was 8:52+/8:51+) Coach Reese said this after Clark's 14:39 split at the 1650: “It gave me chills. And, I’m definitely too old for chills.” Joe Schooling's 300 free was a 2:29.61 Will Licon's 300 breast was 2:57.89. Jack Conger's 300 fly was 2:39:88 and his 150 fly was 1:13.09 Ryan Harty's 300 back was 2:40.78. The Conger v Schooling 50 fly already went live, but I think you'll like our cut of the race. Conger was 20.71 to Schooling's 20.86. After seeing this practice, I can't wait for Men's NCAA Championships, the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, and the 2016 Olympic Games. Texas will be supplying a lot of talent in Rio. Many, many thanks to Coach Kris Kubik and Eddie Reese! Based on my experience, The Eddie Reese Invite is the most exciting SPEED SET in swimming practice history. Texas Speed Practice, The Eddie Reese Invite: Gold Medal Minute presented by SwimOutlet.com

12:08
Gold Medal Minute presented by http://www.swimoutlet.com: Swimming News courtesy of http://swimswam.com The University of Texas Swimming and Diving team is one of the greatest collegiate programs of all-time, and that fact was never more evident than last Friday when I witnessed practice. I've known Longhorns Head Coach Eddie Reese just shy of 30 years, and he was my Olympic coach back in 1992, so a call from him is always nice, but when he invites you to practice, that's a great call! Last Friday's session was one big test set, known as The Eddie Reese Invite: - 600 IM, 600 free - 300 IM, 300 of each stroke - 150 IM, 150 of each stroke - 100 IM, 100 of each stroke - 50 of each stroke The Longhorn Men had to swim at least 4 times fast. They suited-up and Associate Head Coach Kris Kubik was the starter…and my color analyst. (Watch out Rowdy Gaines. Kubik is A-list!) Jack Conger was clearly a highlight. His 2:38 300 yard backstroke was flawless. Based on that swim, I think Cal's Ryan Murphy is on notice. I can't wait to see them face-off at NCAA Champs in the 2-back. Joe Schooling isn't suffering any college-freshman-blues. His 2:43 300 yard butterfly was impressive, going sub 55 on his last 100, and in his 150 yard fly he was 47.9 on the way to a 1:14. I tried to captured every swim, but it was just me behind the camera. Sorry. Lesson learned. Next time I get the call from Eddie, I'm bringing backup. Many thanks to the Longhorns for the inviting SwimSwam down to film. This is a Gold Medal Media production presented by SwimOutlet.com. Michael Andrew 100m Free best time

01:31
Race video edit by Coleman Hodges. Race video is courtesy of Team Andrew / USRPT / http://www.usrpt.info Swimming News is courtesy of SwimSwam.com Recent Adidas Swim-signee, Michael Andrew, was not at the L.A. Invite nor at Athens Sectionals this past weekend, but he did make his own waves at two other events, swimming at both the Colorado Zone 5 in Colorado Springs, Colorado and “Wave the Wheat Invitational” in his native Lawrence, Kansas. In Colorado Springs, Andrew raced his way to four first-place finishes over the course of the meet, starting off with a time of 23.20 in the 50m freestyle. Andrew added his second and third individual meet wins in the 100m breaststroke and 100m butterfly races, registering times of 1:03.48 and 56.06, respectively. The 16-year old wrapped up the zone meet with his 4th-fastest 50m backstroke performance of 2015 so far, a time of 26.17 to secure the event victory. Back in Lawrence, Kansas on Sunday, Andrew took on the men’s 100m freestyle event at the Wave the Wheat Invitational where he managed to blow away his own personal best in the event. Coming into the meet, Andrew's fastest outing was the 51.24 he registered at 2014 Summer Nationals. But, the young talent cranked out a speedy 50.67 in his hometown yesterday to knock over a half a second from that earlier mark, dipping him beneath the 51-second threshold for the first time in his career. The 15-16 National Age Group Record in the 100m freestyle event still stands at 49.28 held by now-University of Florida Gator, Caeleb Dressel. However, with Michael Andrew having just turned 16 in April and now positioned at the upper end of the age bracket, the NAG record in this race, as well as many others, know their spot on the record books is on borrowed time.

Is Ledecky the Greatest Freestyler of All-Time? Gold Medal Minute presented by SwimOutlet.com

06:05
Swimming News - SwimSwam.com (http://swimswam.com): Katie Ledecky now has the 400, 800 and 1500 meter freestyle world records, and she appears to be ontrack to threaten the 200 freestyle world record by the 2016 Olympic Games. Is Ledecky the greatest freestyler of all-time? Greatness, in swimming, is typically measured by Olympic gold medals, but for us -- hardcore swim fans -- I feel world record swims matter more. It's pure, simple, fast swimming at any time. HOWEVER, I do believe Ledecky could win the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle at the 2016 Olympic Games. (And I think we, swimfans, should start a campaign to allow Ledecky to race the men's 1500 freestyle if the International Olympic Committee doesn't include the 1500m for women in Rio.) I've looked through the swimming history books. I can't find her match. Debbie Meyer won the 200, 400 and 800m free at 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, but I think Ledecky could top that performance in either direction. Ledecky could crush the 1500m (if it were an official women's event), and I believe Ledecky can make Team USA's 4x100 freestyle relay. Think about it. If Ledecky can final in the 100m free in Omaha at US Olympic Trials, all she has to do is beat two people to get a spot on the sprint relay. QUESTION: Is Ledecky potential the greatest freestyler of all-time for men or women? Please share your knowledge of the sport in the comments. This is a Gold Medal Media production presented by SwimOutlet.com (http://www.swimoutlet.com). Host Gold Medal Mel Stewart is a 3-time Olympic medalist and the co-founder of SwimSwam.com (http://swimswam.com).

The New Swim Stars of 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials: Gold Medal Minute presented by SwimOutlet.com

07:05
This is a Gold Medal Minute production presented by SwimOutlet.com (http://www.swimoutlet.com). Swimming News is courtesy of SwimSwam.com (http://swimswam.com). Back in the day, NCAA Champions often went on to win Olympic medals, or at the very least, make the U.S. Olympic Swim Team. That's not the case anymore, however, there are a some swim stars emerging from the college ranks that have a great shot at capturing the spotlight in Omaha, Ryan Murphy, Jack Conger, David Nolan, Will Licon and Caeleb Dressel. Cal Golden Bear Ryan Murphy appears to have the best shot in backstroke. Longhorns Jack Conger and Will Licon are moving on butterfly and IM. Stanford's David Nolan has finally developed into the star swimmer we hoped for since his stunning high school years, and his 1:39.3 200 year IM was our audience's top record swim from our A3 Poll. Finally Caleleb Dressel just keeps getting faster, missing the 50 yard free American Record by .01. Of this talented crew, who will make the U.S. Olympic Team at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha? This is a Gold Medal Media production presented by SwimOutlet.com. Is Dressel The Greatest Yards Swimmer of All-Time? GMM presented by SwimOutlet.com

04:56
Swimming news courtesy of SwimSwam.com (https://swimswam.com) Gold Medal Minute presented by SwimOutlet.com (https://www.swimoutlet.com) 7-time World Championship gold medalist and 2016 Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel continues to wow us. After the 2018 SEC Championships, see his yards record times so far: 50 yard free - 18.20 100 yard free - 40.00 100 yard butterfly - 43.58 100 yard breaststroke - 50.03 200 yard IM - 1:38.13 SO MANY QUESTIONS... ONE: Is Dressel the greatest yards swimmer of all-time?  I think so. I can't think of anyone else as fast across a wide range of strokes. You could make the case that Pablo Morales is the man with his 11 NCAA Championship wins, but he didn't crush it across so many strokes.  Caeleb's got fly, free and breast locked up, with 200 IM as the bonus record stunner. TWO: Is Dressel facing off with Joe Schooling in the 100 fly at NCAAs or will he swim 100 breast?  I could see Dressel swimming 100 breaststroke, but I think he's swimming 100 fly after his 49.8 100m fly last summer.  100 breast at NCAAs appears to be an easier win, but I don't think Coach Troy (or Dressel) cares about that. THREE: Does Dressel dip under 40 flat in the 100 free?  FOUR: Is a 17.99 50 free more impressive than 39.99 100 free?  FIVE: What swimwear brand lands this guy?  He turns pro after NCAAs.... I have no clue, but it's going to be interesting to see. What do you think?  This is a Gold Medal Media production presented by SwimOutlet.com. Practice + Pancakes: Nitro Swim Club

04:08
I visited Nitro Swim Club in Austin, Texas. They’re a massive club that’s only been in existence for a decade, and the talent they produce reflects their philosophy they stand by. On the Thursday I arrived, their National group had a classic test set: 9 x 100 @ 7:00. Although that’s not quite what ended up being the case. Practice + Pancakes: UT Men + Dean Farris Tackle Fast Friday

09:22
It’s the heart of long course season. Teams are training hard and loading up on their swimmers. What better time to go and see what the 4-time reigning NCAA champs are up to? On this particular Friday, the Texas men were going off the blocks. And they weren’t alone either. As reported last month, Dean Farris is in Austin getting some long course work in to prepare for nationals. Hawaiian swimmer Metin Aydin was also in town for the same reason. Madisyn Cox was swimming with the guys today. What I’m trying to say is that you had training partners galore. Practice + Pancakes: Stanford Women's 400 IM Group

08:44
Lets give this group a little bit of context before we delve into the main set. The 4 girls leading lanes (for most of the set) placed 1,2,4, and 14 at this year’s NCAAs. The 3 that were in the A final all dipped under 4:00. The 2 that went 1-2 have both held the American record (yards) at one point in this event. And that’s just the leading 4. So let’s see what battle Greg had these girls fight today. Practice + Pancakes: TCU Takes on Friday Fright Night Stations

04:08
Recently in Fort Worth, SwimSwam got the opportunity to chat with Sam Busch on how his head coaching journey at TCU is going so far. He’s taken on quite the team; men’s and women’s teams combined, there are a whopping 63 athletes on the roster. Not only that, but TCU primarily trains in a 6 lane, 25-yard pool. For any program, but especially a Division I college program, that’s a tight fit. Michael Andrew Opens Up About Turning Pro at 14: Gold Medal Minute presented by SwimOutlet.com

Swimming News is courtesy of SwimSwam.com (http://swimswam.com). To view the latest racing suit technologies visit http://www.swimoutlet.com/racingtechnologies Michael Andrew has become one of the most famous swimmers on earth, all before making his first USA National A Team. Breaking 76 plus U.S. National Age Group records helped, but it was his decision to turn at 14 that captured global headlines. Michael is the youngest swimmer to turn pro in USA Swimming history. Many swim fans were concerned about the pressures of a pro carreer on a swimmer so young. At the 2015 Santa Clara Pro Swim, Michael announced his multi-year partnership with Adidas, but he also opened up about the stress and anxiety he experienced the year he turned pro. Michael will compete at USA Swimming Nationals in San Antonio, Texas August 6-10th. His goal is to make the USA Junior Swimming World Championships Team. 2015 FINA Junior Swimming World Championships take place in Singapore, August 25-30th. Beyond the Pancakes: How Does Todd DeSorbo Train Sprinters?

07:20
It's what so many swim fans want to see: the very fastest possible, and then get faster. Training sprinters to be as fast as they possibly can comes in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and philosophies. For UVA head coach Todd DeSorbo, it means going as fast as you can. All the time.  Read more here: Swimming news courtesy of SwimSwam.com (https://swimswam.com) Follow SwimSwam on: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/swimswamnews/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/swimswamnews Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/swimswamnews/

How Does Olympic Champion Ryan Murphy Taper? GMM presented by SwimOutlet.com

04:44
Swimming news courtesy of SwimSwam.com (https://swimswam.com) Gold Medal Minute presented by SwimOutlet.com (https://www.swimoutlet.com) Three-time 2016 Olympic Champion, Ryan Murphy, was all smiles at the Pro Swim in Santa Clara--because he’s nearing taper-time.  It's been nearly a year since Ryan tapered.  That's all fine by Ryan, who feels like he's gotten a lot more base-work in the bank. In this video, Ryan breaks down the difference between tapering under his former Bolles School coach, Sergio Lopez (now the head college coach at Virginia Tech) and his current Cal coach, Dave Durden. Interestingly, in high school, Sergio would drop weights about three weeks out, while Durden continues training in the weight room, albeit light work, up until a week out. After a year of heavy training, Ryan says his legs are going to need more rest--a lot more rest.  Sounds like a positive sign for fast swims in Irvine at U.S. Nationals.  What will it take for Ryan to regain the title Greatest Backstroker on Earth this summer? I'm sticking by my predictions from earlier this year: 51.79 - 100m back 1:53.57 - 200m back What do you think? This is a Gold Medal Media production presented by SwimOutlet.com. Practice + Pancakes: Springfield Aquatics Make Good Use of Tempo Trainers and Touchpads

09:20
SwimSwam took a visit down to Springfield Aquatics and stayed for a practice with their senior group with lead coach, Thomas Baumann. Coach Thomas is great at innovation and trying new things with his kids, both in and out of the pool. You can see that with his dryland work, as he has his kids doing all sorts of fun exercises including rope climbs, weighted wall sits, and whatever you call those things where you’re laying down and you pull the band with your foot. I thought those were great. Read more here: https://swimswam.com/practice-pancakes-springfield-aquatics-make-good-use-of-tempo-trainers/ Swimming news courtesy of SwimSwam.com (https://swimswam.com)

Practice + Pancakes: University of Arizona Throws Down After Mesa

Hot off the Pro Swim stop in Mesa, the University of Arizona wildcats were back in the water Monday morning. SwimSwam was not there for that. However! We did join them for their afternoon workout, which looked a little different for each group. Practice & Pancakes: Rice University

02:47
When I walked into Rice University on an early Tuesday morning, I was impressed to see all the women already doing stretches and pre-workout exercises, taking into account they had to be in the water by 6am. You could tell they were disciplined and committed to readying themselves for the challenge that came next.
