NASA Finds Most Earth-Like Planet Yet

02:34
Researchers have discovered the most similar planet yet to Earth, 1,400 light-years away. Kepler-452b orbits its star in 385 days, just 20 days longer than our own year. Its star is just 4% larger, a billion and a half years older, and 20% brighter than the sun, meaning 452b is firmly in the “goldilocks” habitable zone that puts the odds of it being rocky, like Earth, between 50-62%. More Information: http://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-kepler-mission-discovers-bigger-older-cousin-to-earth http://www.theguardian.com/science/2015/jul/23/nasa-closest-twin-to-earth-kepler-452b http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/24/science/space/kepler-data-reveals-what-might-be-best-goldilocks-planet-yet.html?_r=0 Subscribe to TDC: https://www.youtube.com/TheDailyConversation/ Like our page on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/thedailyconversation Join us on Google+ https://plus.google.com/100134925804523235350/posts Follow us on Twitter http://www.twitter.com/thedailyconvo Researchers have discovered the most similar planet yet to Earth, 1,400 light-years away. Scientist Jeff Coughlin says “this is the first possibly rocky, habitable planet around a solar-type star.” All 11 previously discovered exoplanets of similar size and orbit circle smaller, cooler stars. The planet was found by the Kepler telescope, which searches for possible Earth-twins by observing periodic dips in the brightness of stars as planets pass before them, like the way our moon causes an eclipse here on Earth. The Kepler telescope stared at a single patch of the Milky Way for four years before its pointing system failed in 2013, but the mission still succeeded in cataloguing more than 4,600 exoplanet candidates. This means astronomers still have huge amounts of data to sort through and make new findings, like this discovery. With 452b, just over 1,000 of the exoplanet candidates have now been confirmed. 20 years ago this fall, the first exoplanet orbiting a distant star was discovered. And with the successor to Kepler launching in 2017, the pace of discovery is about to increase substantially. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (or TESS), will be able to cover hundreds of times as much sky as the Kepler mission, and will identify prime targets for further examination by the successor to Hubble, the James Webb Space Telescope, set for an October 2018 launch. Astronomers can now project with some degree of confidence that of the 600 stars within 30 light-years of Earth, there should be roughly 60 potential earth-twins. So, according to Dr. Didier Queloz, the man who co-discovered that first earth-like planet 20 years ago, “If we keep working so well and so enthusiastically, the issue of life on another planet will be solved.” Like and share this video to help others on our little rock become aware of this good news. China's Amazing Water Canal | China's Future MEGAPROJECTS: Part 2

02:08
South-to-North Water Transfer Project: The huge populations filling China's northern megacities have a shortage of the single most necessary resource for life: water. To solve that problem, the Chinese will soon be moving 44.8 billion cubic meters of fresh water each year from the wetter South to the dryer North. Subscribe to TDC: https://www.youtube.com/TheDailyConversation/ More info: https://www.wikiwand.com/en/South%E2%80%93North_Water_Transfer_Project Like our page on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/thedailyconversation Join us on Google+ https://plus.google.com/100134925804523235350/posts Follow us on Twitter http://www.twitter.com/thedailyconvo The huge populations filling the megacities in the North have a shortage of the single most necessary resource for life: water. To solve that problem, the Chinese will soon be moving 44.8 billion cubic meters of fresh water each year from the wetter South to the dryer North. There will be three canals in the project, a 716 mile-long Eastern Canal that will begin at the Yangtze River and snake uphill, with the help of more than 20 pumping stations, to reservoirs in Tianjin. Route two will flow downhill from the Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Han river 785 miles across the North China Plain to Beijing. And the third route is the Big Western Line. It’s still in its planning phase, but it will divert water from the rivers flowing into the Yangtze, sending it to the Yellow River instead. The Central Government has rammed this project through despite many concerns over pollution and the forced relocation of hundreds of thousands of villagers. It’s also late and over budget due to the soaring costs of building bridges and tunnels for the canals to cross the many rivers and highways in its way. Then there are the fears that diverting water from the Yangtze River could cause the world’s third-longest river to run low, devastating those whose livelihoods depend on it. One proposed solution to this problem is to give the Yangtze more water by redirecting rivers in southwestern China. But this would affect India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, potentially causing an international crisis. For the immediate future though, the South-to-North water Transfer Project is a done deal. Following the example of the American West in the previous century, China has completely reshaped its environment using dams and canals, allowing for the arid North to support tens of millions more residents than it otherwise could. But the massive one we’re supposedly long overdue for will actually hit the Pacific Northwest, devastating Seattle and much of 700 coastal miles from Vancouver to NorCal’s Mendocino Cape. This area lies on the Cascadia subduction zone. The Cascades are the volcanic mountain range that run parallel to the fault, some 100 miles inland, and are formed by the Juan De Fuca tectonic plate colliding with, and sliding underneath, the North American plate. This geological battle will eventually result in the weaker North American plate buckling violently as it gives way to the mounting pressure, dropping several meters in a few seconds. This will cause a 9.2 magnitude megathrust earthquake that will last around 4 minutes and will be 30 times more powerful than anything California’s San Andreas fault can produce. What happens after that is truly terrifying. Since the event will happen in the ocean, it will send a tsunami, a wall of water more than 15 meters high, rushing back toward coastal areas like Puget Sound and the heavily populated Seattle area. As it washes ashore it will destroy everything in its path. The catastrophic tsunami triggered by the 2011 Tōhoku 9.0 earthquake in Japan was responsible for the vast majority of the 18,000+ deaths suffered in that disaster. And Japan even had an early warning system that sensed the initial tremor and automatically activated to save countless lives by shutting down power plants and railways, and performing various other vital services before the full quake and tsunami struck. The Pacific Northwest has no such early warning system. In fact, three years ago the citizens of Seaside, Oregon rejected a plan that would’ve raised their taxes in order to move three schools out of the tsunami inundation zone. [Show clip of devastated school administrator describing why that’s such a mistake.] The voters came to their senses this November and funded a version of the plan, but the story is representative of the lack of awareness those living in the Cascadia Subduction Zone have about the uncertain ground they actually live on. Part of the reason why the region seems to be in a complete state of denial is because the Juan De Fuca plate hasn’t caused an earthquake in 317 years. It’s a sleeping giant that’s 75 years overdue for an awakening. To get a sense for how destructive a 9.2 quake would be, we need look no further than the 1964 Great Alaskan Earthquake of the same magnitude that sent tsunami’s rippling throughout the pacific, one of which killed 12 people in Crescent City, California, some 1,600 miles away from the quake’s epicenter. The biggest problem is that seismology was in its infancy when much of the Pacific Northwest was built, so Portland - for example - didn’t have a seismic building code until 1974. More than a million structures in the region would collapse or be irreparably damaged by a megathrust quake, three thousand of them schools. Other critical infrastructure that will either collapse or be greatly compromised will be half of all highway bridges, fifteen of the seventeen bridges spanning Portland's two rivers, two thirds of all railways and airports, one-third of all fire stations, half of all police stations, and two-thirds of all hospitals. There will also be land liquefaction, a phenomenon whereby partially saturated soil loses strength and stiffness. Not only does 15 percent of Seattle lie on land vulnerable to liquefaction, but so does Oregon’s Critical Infrastructure hub where miles of gas lines converge. megaquake

World's Largest Wind Farm | China's Future MEGAPROJECTS: Part 6

So the fact that China is building the world’s largest Wind Power Farm too shouldn’t surprise you. The Gansu Wind Farm Project will produce 20 Gigawatts of power by 2020, and will cost nearly $20 billion to build. Turbines are going up at the staggering rate of 35 per day across the three areas that make up the power base. In 2012, Gansu’s capacity surpassed the total wind-generated-electricity produced by all of the United Kingdom, and it’s just the largest of six mega-wind farms currently under construction throughout China. But China isn’t embracing wind just to reduce its carbon emissions, it’s doing everything it can to simply keep the lights on. Some parts of the country with booming middle class populations suffer persistent electricity shortages because, just like us, people want refrigerators, dishwashers, washer and dryers, and computers in their homes, but there’s only so much energy to go around. So China’s State Council is pushing for an across-the-board renewable strategy to reduce its dependence on oil, coal and gas, the finite resources of the 20th century whose extraction and consumption are subject to constant geopolitical tensions. As a result, since 2013, China has led the world in renewable energy production, with a total capacity of 378 installed Gigawatts, coming from projects as wide-ranging as Gansu to hydroelectric power plants like the Three Gorges Dam, which spans the Yangtze River and is the world’s largest power station of any kind. In just the last 10 years, China has increased its solar panel production 100-fold to become the world’s leading manufacturer of the technology. With China now pumping more CO2 into the atmosphere than the number two and three emitting countries - the US and India - combined, it’s vital for the future of the planet that it continues using MegaProjects to create a lot more Megawatts of clean, green power. Africa's Mega-City: Future MEGAPROJECTS

07:26
LAGOS, NIGERIA — population 22 million — is Africa's largest city. This mini-documentary examines the multiple mega-projects under construction, the leadership of state Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, and — briefly — the history of Nigeria. Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/TheDailyConversation/ Video by Bryce Plank and Robin West Music: "The Search" by Matt Stewart-Evans: https://soundcloud.com/mattstewartevans https://www.facebook.com/Matthew.Stewart.Evans "Decisions" and "Heavy Interlude" by Kevin MacLeod are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/ "The Stranger" by Glimpse (TDC Remix) https://soundcloud.com/glimpse_official Script: This is Lagos, Nigeria the largest city in Africa. Home to more than 22 million people, it’s facing a perfect storm of challenges. So let’s look at how this megacity is trying to modernize. The biggest challenge Nigeria faces is a population pyramid that’s overwhelmingly bottom heavy. 61% are younger than 25—that’s a lot of jobs to create and houses to build in the coming years. This problem is made worse by the extremely poor condition of the city’s infrastructure. Badly designed and maintained motorways cause people to endure agonizing commute times, and interrupted access to electricity causes regular blackouts. Add in the threat of a rising ocean that’s steadily eroding the coastline, and the future of this place looks bleak. But perspective is relative, so let’s gain some. 165 years ago Lagos was an island fortress and one of the principal roots of the slave trade, until the British navy bombarded it into submission and abolished the practice. But slavery wasn’t outlawed in Northern Nigeria until 1936. That means any Nigerian older than 85 can probably still remember slavery, or was a slave themselves. In 1960, Nigeria gained independence from the British. But, the country quickly became engulfed in a civil war that killed as many as 3 million people. In the dark aftermath of this bloody conflict the country had one thing going for it: oil, which provided a consistent source of income. But the temptation of controlling all that black gold attracted deeply corrupt men, and Nigeria endured decades of violent struggles between power-mad dictators and military officers. With just two legitimate presidential elections under its belt, in 2011 and 2015, Nigeria has only had six years of truly peaceful, independent — not completely corrupt — democratic rule in its entire history. All this upheaval was amplified by strong ethnic and religious divisions throughout the country. So for the federal government to appear legitimate, the capital had to move away from Lagos to a more centralized, neutral part of the country. Following in the footsteps of Brazil’s master-planned capital, Brasilia, the Nigerians built an entire city from scratch during the 1980’s. The relocation of thousands of government workers drove migration to this new capital, Abuja, the fastest growing city in the world from 2000 to 2010. Unfortunately, while Abuja thrived, Lagos languished. With the city far away now it became even easier for deeply corrupt federal officials to neglect the megacity’s needs. But the its downward spiral is quickly changing direction thanks — largely — to one man, the current governor of the state of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode. Ambode earned his Master’s in accounting from the University of Lagos and studied abroad in England, Switzerland, Singapore, and at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in Boston. [Osoba]: “Everything about this man is outstanding, everything about him… He is someone who does not leave a place without changing it for the better.” Now 53 — with a long career serving the people of Lagos under his belt — Ambode hit the ground running upon his election in 2015. He immediately began holding regular town hall meetings. This helped him tailor his plans to best affect positive change for citizens that they could see and feel. He installed a team of competent deputies who’ve helped him implement his mega-master plan of targeted micro projects to drastically improve conditions throughout the city. Lagosians are already feeling the benefits of his less than two years in office. [Citizen of Lagos]: “Today we are happy because the government have done a perfect job here. Now we can have a good access roads to get to our homes. And you can see business around this area, they are doing very well.” By making road fixes his first major task, Ambode wisely accomplished several important things that any new leader should immediately set out to do. The other half of this modernization equation rests largely on the success of two key mega-projects under construction in Lagos and Abuja: Eko Atlantic, a financial hub that’s being built on reclaimed land along the coast; and Centenary City.

10 Best Countries At Recycling

02:42
The ten countries that recycle the highest proportion of their municipal waste. FB for daily news: http://www.facebook.com/thedailyconversation http://www.twitter.com/thedailyconvo Subscribe to TDC: https://www.youtube.com/TheDailyConversation/ Sources: https://stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?DataSetCode=MUNW Researched, written, narrated and produced by Bryce Plank Video editing and effects by Robin West Script: These are the 10 countries with the important distinction of having the highest rates of recycling their municipal waste. Iceland keeps 45% of its waste out of landfills. The country’s extremely small 332,000 population helps, as does Sweden, who takes in and recycles all of Iceland’s paper and plastic. The Italians have impressively doubled their recycling rate in the last decade, reversing a reputation for poor waste management. Food waste in Milan is collected and fed into anaerobic digesters, which generates electricity to power a plastic reprocessing plant located on the same site. Luxembourg, like number 10 Iceland, has less than a million people. Glass bottles can be returned to the shop where they were purchased in exchange for a fee--similar to community recycling centers here in the States. Sweden prevents 99% of its household waste from reaching landfills by incinerating more than 2 million tons of it to generate heat and electricity. The Swedes take pride in having reduced their heavy metal emissions by 99% since 1985. The Dutch approach to recycling is called Lansinks Ladder, based on the simple approach of creating as little waste as possible, but recovering and reusing the valuable materials when waste is generated. The Swiss have extensive rules regulating recycling and waste disposal and operate on the simple, but beautiful Polluter Principle, which states: the party that produces the pollution is responsible for paying for the damage done to the natural environment. Belgium is the most efficient country in Europe, generating just 197 kilos of waste per person, only about 2% of which ends up in landfills. Austria has easily exceeded the European Union goal of a 50% recycling rate by the year 2020. The Waste Management Act helped its citizens understand the exact ways they should be recycling. With half of Korea’s 25 million people living in its capital, Seoul, the world’s second largest city, it makes sense for it to be so good at recycling. It simply doesn’t have the space not to be. Starting in the mid-80’s the Koreans were an early adopter of the three ‘Rs’ standard: reduce, reuse, recycle. And with 82 millions citizens, the most on this list, the Germans bring a whole new level of efficiency to the quest for a zero waste future. Germany’s Green Dot initiative has put businesses on a diet: the more packaging there is, the more that manufacturer or retailer has to pay in fees. By embracing the best practices that are successful in each of these countries, every country in the world can drastically cut down on its waste. Many of the world’s biggest producers and consumers have a lot of work to do on this front. But if populated countries like Germany, South Korea, and Italy can do it, so can nations like China, the US, Japan, and India. Thanks for watching. Until next time, I’m Bryce Plank.

The Future of Airplanes

03:53
Planes will change a lot in the next 50 years. This is look at the developments in airplane technology that are likely in the future of aviation. This is the future of flight. With the first all-electric twin-engine, self-powered plane successfully crossing the English Channel this month, and the ongoing effort of the Solar Impulse team to become the first completely solar-powered aircraft to fly around the world, the amount of innovation targeting the aviation industry is eye-opening. Within the next year, unmanned, solar-powered drones like the Silent Falcon will hit the commercial UAV market. The Joby Aviation S2 electric is a proposed Vertical Takeoff and Landing aircraft that could be five times as efficient as a conventional personal airplane. Airbus’ two passenger version of the E-Fan will use on-board lithium batteries to power two electric engines. The Aeroscraft ML868 could lead a comeback of giant airships. The 770 foot-long behemoth can carry 200 tons with cargo bays larger than any current air, truck or rail transport vehicle. Aerion’s AS2 is the first supersonic commercial jet since the Concorde. It will fly at a speed of Mach 1.6. Laminar flow technology and better wing design will reduce drag by 20%. By the middle of the 2020’s we’ll likely see solar powered drones delivering broadband to millions for a fraction of the cost of traditional satellites. Building on the concept of drones and autonomous flying technology, fully-automated planes will take to the skies to revolutionize not just the air cargo delivery industry, but possibly personal air travel as well, much like what’s happening today with driverless cars. By 2030, plant-based fuels should account for 30% or more of an airlines’ fuel consumption. Airbus’ hybrid commercial airliner will emit barely any emissions or noise on takeoff and landing thanks to lithium-air batteries. Boeing and NASA could team to launch a hybrid commercial airliner called SUGAR for Subsonic Ultra-Green, Aircraft Research, which uses two-thirds less fuel than an equivalent sized aircraft from 2015. Traveling 10% slower, but using 70% less fuel than today’s Boeing 737, the D8 Series Double Bubble’s fuselage will provide 20% of its lift. By 2040, we could see the world’s first hydrogen powered commercial flight. The hydrogen would be cryogenically frozen. EAD’s Zero Emission High Supersonic Transport passenger jet, running on biofuel, could cut the more than 6,000 mile flight from Paris to Tokyo to just 2:30 minutes. Like a fighter jet on an aircraft carrier, commercial planes could be catapulted into the air, reducing the length of runways by one-third. As if they were a flock of migrating birds, more intelligent systems could allow aircraft on the same routes to self-organize into a flying patter, reducing wind drag and saving fuel. Six hydrogen engines, a rear engine that doubles as a wind turbine, and solar panels on its roof and wings will propel the zero-emission Progress Eagle, a triple-decker, 800-passenger airplane concept that we could see in production by 2070.

"Unless you're Native American, you came from someplace else."

03:05
President Obama reminds the American people that all citizens of the U.S. are descended from immigrants. Watch the full speech here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lVIuW8vJ_E "Immigration's always been an issue that inflames passions. That's not surprising. There are a few things that are more important to us as a society than who gets to come here and call our country home. Who gets the privilege of becoming a citizen of the United States of America. That's a big deal. When we talk about that in the abstract, it is easy sometimes for the discussion to take on a feeling of us versus them. And when that happens, a lot of folks forget that most of us used to be them. We forget that. And it's really important for us to remember history. Unless you're one of the first Americans, a Native American, you came from some place else, somebody brought you. The Irish who left behind a land of famine; the Germans who fled persecution; the Scandinavians who arrived eager to pioneer out west; the Polish, the Russians, the Italians, the Chinese, the Japanese, the West Indians -- the huddled masses who came through Ellis Island on one coast and Angel Island on the other. All those folks before they were us, they were them. And when each new wave of immigrants arrived, they faced resistance from those who were already here. They faced hardship. They faced racism. They faced ridicule. But over time, they went about their daily lives. They earned a living as they raised a family, as they built a community, as their kids went to school here. They did their part to build the nation. They were the Einsteins and the Carnegies, but they were also the millions of women and men whose names history may not remember, but whose actions helped make us who we are, who built this country hand by hand, brick by brick. They all came here knowing that what makes somebody an American is not just blood or birth, but allegiance to our founding principles and the faith in the idea that anyone from anywhere can write the next great chapter of our story, and that's still true today."
